What makes us different – and best for you

Athena Consulting is all about you: your needs, your goals, your dreams, and how our team can get you there – wherever “there” may be.

That’s been our mission from the beginning. And that’s what makes us unique.

So many doctors, dental associations and vendors have asked the question, “What makes you different from other consultants?” The difference is in our approach.

Of course, we do the things the others do. We consult with an office, spot the things the doctor and staff are doing right and wrong, convey that information to them and suggest changes that can improve the business. We consider that to be the easy part of our jobs.

But for a lot of dental consultants, that’s the whole job: Sell the doctor on us, get the money, get in, get out, move on, and reel in 10 more clients tomorrow.

Rinse and repeat.

That’s not who we are at Athena Consulting.

Our company isn’t about us or the number of clients to whom we can sell our consulting product. Plenty of other firms exist that don’t require a huge personal commitment on the part of every one of their team members. We could have been like them, a business that would bring in higher revenue and net profits without us spending 40 weeks per year away from our own families. We aren’t interested in doing business that way, even though it would provide us a good living without the personal sacrifice.

We are Athena Consulting, and we have a passion for dentistry.

Years ago, I learned that each doctor is unique in many ways – in his or her personality, leadership style and definitions of success and quality of life.

That’s why we are not a consulting company with a manual full of forms that we put in every office and then expect you and your staff to conform to our methods of practice management. Sure, there are some systems that work better than others, but it takes much more than good systems to get you where you want to go throughout your career in dentistry.

Our team collectively has more than 100 years of experience in the dental and consulting fields. I did practice-management consulting for a few decades by myself, but through the years I had the pleasure of working with and training several people who improved the businesses – and thus the lives – of so many dentists. Eventually, I came to know that a good, strong consulting team could achieve much more for our clients than I could alone.

As a team, we work together to provide our clients with full-service consulting. No matter what stage of your career you’re in, we can help you take your dreams and turn them into reality. We’re pros at working with young doctors just getting into practice, current practice owners that need to take their practice to the next level, middle-aged doctors who cannot see retirement anytime in the near future, and those doctors who are ready to enjoy the rewards from working for many decades.

Our team consists of clinical and business people who have the experience and knowledge to ensure your success. We are always learning about the newest technology and procedures, and we keep up with the ever-changing world of dentistry in all its specialties.

When we have our initial consultation, we are not going to talk about us. We are going to talk about you – and do a whole lot of listening. Some of the areas we will discuss are:

  • What is your background?
  • Why did you choose dentistry as a profession?
  • What is your definition of success?
  • What quality-of-life issues are most important to you?
  • How much money do you want to make?
  • At what age would you like to be prepared for retirement?
  • Do you want to practice solo or in a group?
  • What dental procedures do you enjoy most?
  • What dental procedures will you refer out?
  • Where do you want to live?
  • Where do you want to practice?
  • What do you expect to gain from your career in dentistry?
  • How do you plan to meet your goals?
  • What are your short-term career goals?
  • What are your long-term career goals?
  • What role, if any, will your spouse take in your practice?
  • What are your professional and personal strengths?
  • What are your professional and personal weaknesses?

There’s a lot more; the list is far too long to publish here. But every bit of it matters.

When we have concluded that initial consultation, we’ll customize a plan designed to get you where you want to go; from point A to point B in the shortest amount of time, steering around the headaches and costly mistakes.

This is your career and livelihood we’re talking about, and we take it seriously.

We’re Athena Consulting. And that’s how we’re different. Your focus is dentistry; our focus is your success.

Let's get started!
